Parenting is about raising a child in love.
Parenting means guiding and caring for the child.
Love and respect goes both ways. While kids are expected parents to respect their parents, parents too should respect their children’s views.
The bible teaches us how to parent.
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.
Parenting involves mutual respect.
1 Samuel 2:27-29
27 Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh?
28 I chose your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings presented by the Israelites.
29 Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’
Love them. Guide them. But do not spoil them.
Eli was a good man who loved the lord. He was a priest of God. But he did not discipline his sons as strongly as he should have.
Although Eli knew God, his sons did not. They abused their position as priests of God.
As a result, Eli’s sons and future generations were dealt with severely by God.
It’s about balance. Guiding them in love.
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
